How to Treat a Foot Blister

Socks

Make sure you wear breathable socks. When your feet heat up on a run, your socks should be able to cool you down. If you're not sure what socks you should get, ask a shoe specialist. The packaging usually says quick drying or breathable.

Keep Dry

When you're preparing for a race or workout, make sure your feet are completely dry before you slip on your socks and shoes. This can help prevent blisters. Apply foot powder or baby powder before putting on your socks. This will help soak up any sweat.

Tape up your feet or use band aids. This will be another barrier to prevent skin rubbage on your shoes.

You can use a blister block or petroleum jelly for prevention. This eases any friction that's caused from your shoe. Just remember, if you feel any discomfort, you should stop before anything gets worse.

Treatment

If you do have a small and uncomplicated blister, there are a few ways to treat it at home. But, if you have large, complicated blisters (severe pain or odd color) you should see your doctor for treatment options.

  • Clean the blister with rubbing alcohol.
  • Use a clean needle by using rubbing alcohol to disinfect it.
  • Gently poke the affected area with the needle. The liquid underneath will start to ooze out.
  • Lightly push on the area to keep the liquid coming out.
  • Blot the area with a clean towel.
  • Cover the affect area with a bandage.
  • Make sure to keep the treated area clean and covered until it has healed completely.
