3 Tips to Survive the Holiday Season

Written by

Getting back into shape during the holidays is a very big challenge. With Halloween comes the candy. Thanksgiving brings all of the fixings, making it very hard to not overeat. December is packed with holiday parties full of lots of tempting goodies.

If you are trying to lose or maintain your weight, below are some simple tips to keep you on track, while allowing you to still enjoy the holidays.

Give Away the Candy

If you are one that tends to buy too much candy than you have trick-or-treaters for, don't give into keeping some for you or your family.  If you must give-in, only take your two favorite pieces to eat and give the rest away by bringing it to your office, your partner's office, or throw it away. Get it out of your house because if the candy isn't staring at you, you won't be tempted to eat it.

Don't Go Overboard

Did you know that the average Thanksgiving dinner is about 3,000 calories?  Since Thanksgiving only occurs once per year, don't deprive yourself of not having certain foods because they are laden with fat in calories. Instead, enjoy a small portion (the size of a handful) of each food, so you get a taste of everything. While others are going back for second and third helpings, resist the urge, as you know you have gotten enough to eat. Save your extra calories for a small piece of dessert. Get back on track the next day with your healthy eating and exercise routine.

Don't Attend a Party Starving

If your calendar tends to fill-up with holiday parties during the month of December and you are worried about sticking to your healthy eating routine, don't go to the parties when you haven't eaten anything for hours.  If you are really hungry, you will tend to eat anything you can get your hands on, which will leave you overeating in no time.

Instead, have a small healthy snack before you go, such as an apple with a tablespoon of peanut butter, yogurt with some fruit, or a quarter cup of almonds. When you arrive at the party, practice portion control, choosing a small (handful) size of your favorite foods, or if you must, of all the menu items, so you get a little taste of everything. By practicing proper portion control, you will be able to enjoy your favorite foods, without depriving yourself.

Whether you are trying to lose weight or maintain your weight, try these tips and keep your goal in the forefront of your mind. By visualizing your goal and practicing healthy habits, you will get through the holiday season without gaining a pound.
