About This Activity

Campers will immerse themselves into the world of river ecology by studying the Royal River (across the street from NYA) in Yarmouth. We will learn the anatomy of a fish, design our own fish, and use nets to try to catch fish in the river. We will also study the macroinvertebrates that live in the water by identifying them, catching them with d-ring nets, studying them under microscopes, and then using the data to tell us whether the river is healthy or not. Campers will study how to test the water quality of the river using a variety of techniques. We will create naturalist journals to document our findings throughout the week. We will present our findings to each other in a River Ecology Forum at the end of the week. Campers should be able to swim and feel comfortable in a river environment to register for this camp. Instructor: Danielle Barschdorf, NYA Science Department Chair and Director of Experiential Learning
