What's Included

This one week camp is for rising 4th and 5th graders. Students (in groups of 3) will build an autonomous robot to carry out pre-designed missions. For the majority of each day students will design, build, and program a LEGO NXT robot that will operate autonomously to compete against other camp teams in competition. Science activities will also be performed by the students throughout the week. Students will learn project management in a team setting, how to build with the Lego NXT system, and basic programming of the NXT. The camp will end in a competition on Friday.

About This Organizer

NOVA SySTMEic is Northern Virginia Community College’s STEM outreach program. We’re passionate about developing a pipeline of student-centered activities from elementary school to career, building the STEM workforce of the future in the process.

The core underpinnings of a competitive economy are the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Northern Virginia faces a critical shortage of skilled workers in these areas and SySTEMic Solutions is focused on changing this.

Our mission is to develop a sustainable STEM pipeline in Northern Virginia. We engage students in elementary school and inspire them to continue to pursue STEM education in high school, college and the workforce through a collaboration with schools, businesses and community organizations.

We have developed partnerships with school divisions, higher education institutions, employers, and chambers of commerce throughout Northern Virginia to create a sustainable workforce pipeline.

Various activities, such as summer STEM camps, career exploration, competitive robotics and STEM dual enrollment are being delivered to participating teachers and students and are built on the critical need for a hands-on, activity based approach to learning STEM through collaboration and innovative teaching methods.

In the end, it’s about relationships, inspiration and skill. If we can capture the minds of young students and inspire them in STEM, then we have established a great platform for excellence, personal career satisfaction, and relationships made and maintained that will foster a desire for students and professionals to remain in Northern Virginia to achieve their dreams in the STEM fields.
