Uses

Garden must be actively used for growing annual vegetables, fruit and flowers, and must be cared for throughout the growing year. Something must be planted by June 15th. Regular care includes planting, watering, and harvesting in a timely fashion, and prompt removal of weeds and spent crop plants. Plots that are not used or cared for may be reassigned.

Individuals and organizations are allowed to sign up for one plot.

Weeds

All plots should look tidy and be kept wee-free throughout the season. Plots in violation of this policy may be re-assigned. Please note that herbicides are not allowed. Get help identifying weeds from the garden coordinator or experienced gardeners.

Tall plants

Please work with your neighbors when planting tall plants such as sunflowers or bean trellises so you don't shade adjacent gardens. Planting trees or shrubs is not allowed at this site.

Chemicals

Organic gardening is required. Use only organic fertilizers, weed killers or bug killers.

If you are unsure whether a product you want to use is allowed, search for it on the Organic Materials Review Institute website at www.Omri.org, or call the Master Gardener Hotline at 503-655-8631

Compost & Waste

There is a large compost bin for spent plants which are to be used for plant debris only (aka weeds that have gone to seed).

There is a trash can located by the shed area to throw non-compostable trash.

Small or tender plant debris is best used by digging it back into the soil in your plot or using it as mulch around your plants.

Water

Water is available for use on your garden via hose. Watering cans and wagon are also available for use should the hose not reach your plot. If you drag the hose to your plot for use, please respect other plots by keeping the hose on the ground and not through other plots/beds.

Use water saving techniques like mulching, direct plant-root watering and avoiding mid-day or overhead watering.

Parking

We encourage walking, bicycling, or riding the bus to the gardens. If you do drive, please park on the street, not on the property.

Meetings & Work Days

All gardeners are required to attend a start-of-season meeting to cover all the ground rules, answer questions, and build familiarity with fellow gardeners.

There are two work days scheduled; a pre-season build and a post-season clean-up. We highly encourage you to participate.

Abandonment

Any garden that is apparently abandoned may be reassigned with 2 week notice. If you are unable to care for your plot for an extended period, please consider giving it up so that someone else can use it. In special circumstances, where illness, injury, or other commitments with a known end-date prevent care of your plot, contact the East Recreation Center immediately and make other arrangements for its care.

Policy Enforcement

East Recreation Staff are responsible for interpreting and enforcing the guidelines. Most issues can be resolved informally, but at times a more formal process is needed to deal with some issues, such as weed policy enforcement. The coordinator will try to call or meet the gardener to discuss problems while they are still small.

If the ERC staff determines that a plot or its person is in substantial violation of garden policies:

Notice of the problem and a request for corrective action will be given.

If the problem remains unresolved 1 week after notice is given, a 2-week written deadline written notice will be given.

If the gardener does not comply within 2 weeks, s/he will be evicted with no refund.

Gardeners are encouraged to discuss the situation with the ERC staff at any time during this process. Special circumstances will be taken into account and other arrangements made at the discretion of the ERC staff.
