National Lifeguard certification is Canada's professional lifeguard standard. This training develops a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgement, and a mature and responsible attitude towards the lifeguard’s role. It emphasizes prevention and effective rescue response in emergencies including first aid treatment. Candidates develop teamwork, leadership and communication skills. Fitness requirements include a timed object recovery, 50 meter sprint challenge, 50 meter rescue drill and 400 meter endurance challenge. Program includes classroom and water activities. 100 % attendance and participation are required. Completion Criteria:• Attend and participate in 100 % of the course.• Successfully demonstrate competency in required skills, activities and final evaluation.Pre-Course Requirements: • 15 years of age by first day of the course• Bronze Cross or Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard • Standard First Aid and CPR-C from one of the following agencies: Red Cross, St. John Ambulance, Lifesaving Society, Criti-Care, Safety Services Manitoba, or Heart Beat Inc. Participants must give prerequisites to the instructor at the first class: • 15 years of age by the first day of the course • Bronze Cross or Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard • Standard First Aid and CPR-C from one of the following agencies: Red Cross, St. John Ambulance, Lifesaving Society, Criti-Care, Safety Services Manitoba, or Heart Beat Inc. Manitoba.
Manuals required for the course (available at the pool): • Alert, Lifeguarding in Action - approximate cost $43.00 • National Lifeguard Award Guide - approximate cost $24.00 Program includes classroom and water activities - 100% attendance and participation are required * Fitness requirements include a timed object recovery, 50-meter sprint challenge, 50-meter rescue drill and 400-meter endurance challenge. The following items must be purchased in order to participate • 1 CPR pocket mask with a 1-way valve • 1 whistle (recommended Fox 40) • 6 pairs of latex-free gloves • 2 roller gauzes • 5 triangular bandages • 10 gauze pads • 1 golf pencil • 1 silver mylar blanket.
Precautionary Measures. The health, safety, and well-being of residents and our employees is our top priority. The City has instituted a number of processes and procedures to help ensure the health and safety of its employees and residents at its facilities: • Customers are asked to use the self-assessment symptom checklist before entering the facility. • Proof of immunization, with proof of government-issued ID, is required to visit and participate in indoor programming at City-operated facilities (including participants, spectators, coaches, etc.). • All individuals entering a City-operated facility are required to wear a face mask. • All individuals must follow current public health orders. • Physical distancing (2 metres) is recommended. • Customers are asked to respect and follow the signage in a facility. • Access to change rooms, showers, and lockers may be limited and spaced out to follow physical distancing guidelines. • Anyone exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms will not be allowed to enter. • Hand sanitizer is available at our facilities. • The collection of personal information for the purposes of contact tracing may be required.
