We start our hike in the lovely seaside village of Carlingford, on the shore of Carlingford Lough. Making our way uphill we head up the saddle of Barnavave, before making the steep ascent to the summit of Slieve Foye (588m), the highest point in Co. Louth. Here we get wonderful views north to Carlingford Lough and the Mournes beyond, and west, to the Cooley hills and Slieve Gullion. We follow the crest of the mountain as it rises over Eagles Rock, then on to Raven’s Rock and Foxes Rock and then east towards Carlingford
Lugnaquilla, Wicklow: September 8th(Sunday): Hard - 17km (6.5hrs)
We start at the site of the memorial stone to the 1798 rebellion and make our way up a forest road into Fraughan Rock Glen, a lovely secluded valley. Steadily gaining height as we climb Lugnaquilla, we reach the broad northern ridge of the mountain with amazing views before reaching the summit cairn. From their we head east, down another broad ridge, taking in the superb views as the whole of the Wicklow mountains are laid out before us, before dropping down to Art’s Lough and into the forest. Soon we reach a forest track and make our descent to the meeting point.
