Two States One Marathon / Half / Relay and 8K! 26.2 mile marathon
The Marathon begins at the scenic Desert River Inn in Umatilla, OR. From there it crosses the McNary Dam into Washington, circles back over the Columbia River Bridge where it follows the Lewis and Clark Trail to Hat Rock State Park, making a loop back down the trail to the finish line.
The scenery is breathtaking in its ability to capture the essence of Eastern Oregon. The Lewis and Clark Trail not only follows the Columbia River but holds a bit of history and makes for an interesting run. The path along that stretch proves a healthy challenge with its off-road running on dirt and gravel and is well worth the effort.
The race';s most breath taking view comes when crossing the McNary dam. The Columbia River Power Marathon is the first recreational event to gain such access. This component is what gives our race its "Power". Many runners have stated that the opportunity to run in two different states during ONE race sets this marathon apart from all others.
This event is more than a race, it is a destination. Participants will be part of an assortment of fun and entertainment such as live music, a potato bar, prizes and an awards ceremony. Every participant receives a draw-string back pack, runner';s bag full of giveaways and medal. Rest stops and aid stations will be manned by several local businesses, organizations and volunteers to provide water, sports drinks, gummy bears, jelly bellies, bananas and more, to re-energize the participants as they make their way to the newly designed finish line.
Oregon Potato Commission is the Title sponsor and contributor although several businesses, organizations and volunteers have donated their services and money in support of the Hermiston High School Cross Country Team.
Word has spread and last year we had participants from New York, Maine, Tennessee and everywhere in between. There were more than 150 participants in 2009 and 300 in 2010!
There is an option for everyone registering for our Columbia River Power Marathon, whether you are a seasoned marathoner looking for a challenging off-road run, or a first timer.
- You can form a relay team of 2-8 people and run on behalf of a charity or make this a competition run for your friends and/or coworkers. The Relay allows participants to run the same race as the other marathoners but at a shorter distance due to the support of team members.
- Our 8K run/walk along with the half marathon, is great for all those who want to cross over the dam and have the same solo experience as the marathon runners but without running the full distance.
*Chip timed races* The marathon will be certified as a Boston Qualifier.
For runner safety, no pets, strollers or wheelchairs will be allowed on the course.
The 8K starts at 8:30am, all other races begin at 8am. Aid stations will not be available after 3:00pm so please bring your own provisions if you don';t think you will finish by that time.
