What's Included

The study of vital genes linked to the onset of human diseases such as muscular dystrophy, diabetes , cancer and neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease function in conserved pathways and are thus studied extensively using model organisms. Due to its short generation time, well defined anatomy and completely sequenced genome C. elegans has quickly become an effective model organism used in laboratories around the world to study a wide range of biological phenomena. In addition to studying the effects of genetic mutations in conserved human disease genes, students will learn the importance of and use of C. elegans as a model organism, and gain practical laboratory skills by performing experimental techniques used in molecular biology and genetics research such as RNAi, PCR, and microscopy, with an introduction to bioinformatics.

About This Organizer

Science Explorations offers fun, innovative and engaging camp programs designed to inspire youth and discover science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).  Based out of the Faculty of Science at York University, our camp programs use an discovery and inquiry-based learning approach that is focused on ‘learning by doing’. Our outreach model provides campers also get a chance to work in small groups on a variety of projects that will help foster problem solving, critical thinking, and an overall passion for STEM.

Our camp takes place within the Faculty of Science at the Keele Campus of York University. Within the university environment, this gives campers the unique opportunity to learn and discover the amazing world of science and engineering . In each of our programs, whether in day-long workshops or  week-long camps, we enrich the learning experience with laboratory visits, faculty presentations, workshops and demonstrations from student groups, and much, much more!
