What's Included

The study of ecology is fundamental to the understanding of environmental processes, the interaction of plants and animals within it, and the effect climate change has on these systems. Mathematics can be used to analyze these models to help us understand the past, present and future dynamics associated with the environment. With the growing concerns attributable to climate change, we must try and understand how the future environment and those organisms within it will change or be affected by this changing climate. In this course, we will examine analyze and quantify climate change using mathematical ecological data to assess the state of warming on the environment and how climate change will impact an organism. We will use case studies, statistical analysis and algorithms, and case scenarios to discern the impact of climate change. Throughout the course, we will explore real-life cases and global threats and devise policies to assist government, companies and the public to help! To reach the public and government agencies, we will also be using social media (e.g., twitter) to help spread awareness. We will conclude the course with a discussion of research companies that conduct long-term and short-term studies on climate change using such modelling and statistical techniques. Guest speakers from a variety of associations and organizations will also be invited to speak.

About This Organizer

Science Explorations offers fun, innovative and engaging camp programs designed to inspire youth and discover science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).  Based out of the Faculty of Science at York University, our camp programs use an discovery and inquiry-based learning approach that is focused on ‘learning by doing’. Our outreach model provides campers also get a chance to work in small groups on a variety of projects that will help foster problem solving, critical thinking, and an overall passion for STEM.

Our camp takes place within the Faculty of Science at the Keele Campus of York University. Within the university environment, this gives campers the unique opportunity to learn and discover the amazing world of science and engineering . In each of our programs, whether in day-long workshops or  week-long camps, we enrich the learning experience with laboratory visits, faculty presentations, workshops and demonstrations from student groups, and much, much more!
