About this event
Join Jeff Hirst to investigate how spontaneous drawings combine with printmaking processes to create unique, hybrid imagery. Beginning with unorthodox as well as traditional mark-making materials, Jeff will guide students through experimental drawing techniques. Participants will be challenged by daily visual prompts to help conjure up new marks and designs. Students will then begin to develop imagery employing the principles of composition including balance, emphasis, simplicity, hierarchy and unity. Then, adding to the complexity and depth of the work, students will begin printing onto the drawings using a variety of demonstrated printmaking techniques. These include linocut, gel plate, and monotypes in ways that enhance both the drawing and the print. Participants will quickly develop unique imagery using a variety of line, shape, value, texture and complex color. This class is an investigation of how process informs your own voice and subject matter. A major focus in Interchangeable Parts is to build, disassemble and rebuild the work in transformational ways that lead to risk-taking and new discoveries. Quick, spontaneous work and portions of drawings and prints will be utilized in unique ways to develop new images. Jeff will lead presentations on contemporary artists using hybrid imagery to spur imagination. Conversations about the ways and means of visual expression and how the may be employed in your own work are key themes in this course. This course is suitable for beginners through advanced students.
