Volunteer Opportunity: United Sports Youth Basketball Coach

Description

As a Youth Basketball Coach at the YMCA, you have an opportunity to positively influence the development of youth and shape and support your community. Sports are a vehicle to so many opportunities—whether it is sportsmanship and values, coaching and sharing, or socializing and learning teamwork.This program will offer a fun, quality basketball experience to non-travel players ages 3-14. Become a mentor by teaching kids the Y way to play!
This basketball program fuels community outreach to get more players involved in the sport of basketball. The program is designed to increase participation and act as a catalyst to get children active. Teams' will practice once per week night and play games on Friday evening or Saturday!
Tasks and Activities Include: -Completion of all required screening/training (see below) -Coaching organized basketball teams offered through the Downriver Y in partnership with the City of Southgate -Coaches will follow the YMCA curriculum and code of conduct for practices and games. -Communicating with parents of athletes as well as YMCA staff -Running 1 practice per week and attending 1 game per week.
Training: All youth sports coaches will be required to complete a national SSN background check, online child abuse prevention and athlete protection trianing, CPR, and a YMCA coach training prior to the start of the season. Approx. 5 hours of training total.

We hold all volunteers regardless of service project, to the highest possible standards. We require volunteers that are working with youth to be screened regularly and sign a code of conduct. All volunteers will be monitored when interacting with program participants. We rake any inappropriate interactions between program participants and with volunteers very seriously and will fully cooperate with authorities in any case of abuse.
