Instructor: Billy Canty The Introduction to Drum Set course with Billy Canty is designed to give a comprehensive overview of the basic methods and skills necessary to play battery percussion instruments such as the snare drum and drum set. The basic snare drumming techniques, bass drum, cymbal and drum set beat techniques will be introduced in a easy to understand and logical way with exercises for practical musical development, expression, coordination and applications in the style of Rock and Pop. In this course, students will be introduced to: snare drum skills including proper grip the understanding of the fulcrum a variety of hand “strokes” that are the foundation for proper stick control warm up stick patterns rhythmic studies reading drum music dynamic control while achieving a full sound basic studies for snare drum and drum set hand and foot coordination (Moeller Method) proper body mechanics proper bass drum technique foot placement drum set setup and design will also be discussed. Supplies needed: notebook, pencil, drum sticks, and practice pad In order to successfully complete the course, the student is expected to practice a minimum of 45 minutes to an hour each day and not miss any classes. A dedicated practice schedule will ensure that the student and course lesson plans will stay on schedule.
