3 Reasons Your Child Should Do an Overnight Sports Camp

2. The Campers Are Always Supervised

In many cases, overnight campers stay in on-campus dorms, often with a roommate. In what little time they're actually in their dorm room, adult supervision is not far away. Camp counselors and coaches will sleep on the same floor right down the hall, and all campers understand where the nearest adult can be found.

Many camps take it even further. At Penn State, for example, the dorms where campers stay are locked 24 hours a day, and university police monitor the building and the surrounding areas throughout the night.

In addition, most camps have strict rules in place about where campers can go. Even during the downtime, campers often are not allowed to leave the dorm. And in many cases, they're not allowed to be anywhere in the dorm except the lobby and the floor that their room is on.

As for the camp sessions themselves, college athletic departments usually have full-time trainers working the camps, so medical assistance is always nearby.

3. The Campers Are Having Fun

If your child loves the sport, there's a good chance they will love the camp they're attending. Not only are they playing games and doing drills that are improving their skills, but they're doing so around dozens of other children the same age and with the same love of the sport that your child has. Camps are a great way to make new friends.

Camp curriculum is often designed—and has been fine-tuned over the years—to balance fun and fundamentals of the sport. Games and scrimmages are common. Prizes, like a camp T-shirt, are awarded for certain accomplishments.

There's a reason summer sports camps are as popular as they are. Not only are they a great chance to improve skills in the summertime, they're also a place where kids have a whole lot of fun.
