During this session campers will learn how to prepare for a hike and how to stay safe in the wilderness. We will talk about natural hazards and what to do if you do get lost. Campers will learn the four points on a compass and a map and how to identify north without a compass. We will explore map reading, types of maps, orienteering, shelter making, fire safety, and the importance of attitude in a survival situation. Each camper will have the opportunity to make a nature journal and a yucca paintbrush. We will draw maps of our adventures, recording points of interest (to increase awareness about our route), and observations of the natural world through art, sit spots and sound maps. Older Children 9-11 will have an opportunity to build a shelter and then sleep in it on Friday at the end of the camp week. This will be a parent chaperoned camping night with families coming together to camp near the shelters.
