This three-week class is designed for students with no or little previous experience of Mandarin Chinese language learning. The goal of this class is: to develop students’ basic Chinese proficiency in the four modalities of language learning: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will learn Hanyu Pinyin (Chinese pronunciation system), Chinese writing system, and Chinese typing. Students will acquire Chinese communication skills through dialogues in personalized mini-situations. to cultivate students’ interest in learning the language. to develop students’ understanding and appreciation of the Chinese culture. Course Topics Mandarin Chinese sounding system: Five Tones and Pinyin Chinese writing system: 30 basic Chinese characters/radicals, etymology Chinese character typing and Calligraphy Songs and skits Classroom Survival Expressions Greetings/Self-Introduction Family Dates and Time Daily Routines Hobbies Hands on projects on themes pertaining to Chinese Culture, Festivals and Customs. This course does not earn high school credit.
