In Musicianship and Music Theory 2, students will analyze select works from the classical music canon, and will be encouraged to bring pieces they wish to study to class. In this class, we will do a deep dive into tonicization, modulation, expanded musical forms, and rhythmic syncopation, with the ultimate aim of understanding how a composer?s technique connects to the communicative and emotional power of music. We will explore how the understanding of theory can enhance a musician?s creativity and interpretive abilities.
Students must bring a 3-ring binder for class handouts, manuscript paper, and pencils. All other course materials will be provided by the instructor.
Prior knowledge of music theory is required. While we will review these topics at the first class, fluency in sight singing and a good working understanding of phrase and harmonic analysis is a general prerequisite. Please contact Harry Whitney at email@example.com to see if this class would be a good fit for you.
