This mid-level course will give students the tools to connect music theory concepts to the repertoire they love. We will explore how the understanding of theory can enhance a musician?s creativity and interpretive abilities. Students will analyze select pieces from the classical repertoire, and are encouraged to bring to class pieces they want to know more about. We will look at works through the many lenses of music theory ? motives, chord progressions, key areas, and form ? with the ultimate aim of understanding how a composer?s technique connects to the communicative and emotional power of his or her music.
Students must bring a 3-ring binder for class handouts, manuscript paper, and pencils. All other course materials will be provided by the instructor.
Prior knowledge of music theory is recommended. While we will review these topics at the first class, a good working understanding of key signatures and Roman numeral harmonic analysis is a general prerequisite. Please contact Harry Whitney at firstname.lastname@example.org to see if this class would be a good fit for you.
