Tempo Runs: What They Are and How to Use Them

Tempo runs are when you get into a good groove that you can hold for a longer distance. They’re longer than threshold runs, and you can maintain the pace for several miles.

There’s a good reason to make tempo runs part of your routine: they can improve your metabolic fitness by teaching the body to use oxygen for metabolism more efficiently.

Once you decide you want to do them, you need to figure out how. You’ll need to put in enough time and do it at the correct intensity. Some runners make their tempo runs too short and too slow.
