***Virtual 5K Run in Alexandria, VA aims to Save Lives by ending Esophageal Cancer***

October 18 - 25, 2020

Hundreds of Americans are taking Steps to Save Lives during the week of October 18!  The Esophageal Cancer Action Network (ECAN) hosts its [name of town] Steps to Save Lives 5K virtually in 2020. Our in-person 5K events are on hold so we can all stay safe and healthy.  But just because we can’t gather at the same park doesn’t mean we can’t be on the same track!  Every step you take will fight Esophageal Cancer by raising awareness that Heartburn can cause Cancer, promoting early detection, supporting patients and families, and increasing medical research funding to prevent, detect, treat, and cure Esophageal Cancer.

How to Sign Up & Run Virtually
Our Virtual Steps to Save Lives 5K is a virtual race that can be run (or walked) from any location you choose! You can run, jog, walk, or roll a stroller or wheelchair on any road, trail, treadmill, track, or at the gym. Go at your own pace – leisurely or in a competitive spirit. Submit your own times to receive awards and medals for the top three finishers overall and in age categories that cover everyone! We are working on the honor system and look forward to seeing your record! Take your Steps alone or with friends, family, or form your own team! You can sign up by going to StepstoSaveLives.org and join in the fight against Esophageal Cancer!

About ECAN

ECAN’s mission is to save lives by increasing awareness about the link between heartburn and cancer, promoting early detection, and supporting medical innovation to prevent, detect and treat Esophageal Cancer. The Baltimore-based, national non-profit organization is led by a board of directors of top physicians, business leaders, and families that have been touched by Esophageal Cancer.

ECAN’s advocacy has made Esophageal Cancer researchers eligible for millions of dollars in funding from the Peer-Reviewed Cancer Research Program of the U.S. Department of Defense.  ECAN’s innovative, Guide for Patients is available at ecan.org as a free download. ECAN successfully advocated with the National Cancer Institute to include Esophageal Cancer in its groundbreaking genome-mapping project known as The Cancer Genome Atlas. That research has opened the door to many new research studies that are leading to new therapies for Esophageal Cancer patients.
