We serve a fragile population. Many were already struggling before this pandemic began. While New York State was on PAUSE, Catholic Charities has been busier than ever. Our staff has been nimble, responding quickly with new ways, and new technology, to provide care and service. We are delivering meals to homebound senior citizens. We are providing shelter for the homeless and helping those in crowded living situations access safer, healthier housing arrangements. We are making sure families have the supplies they need to care for their babies. We are ensuring that individuals working toward recovery have the support and safety they require. We are providing counseling to those who are having difficulty coping with the stress of isolation and the anxiety caused by Coronavirus-related issues.
Through these difficult times in recent months, many people rediscover or de-stress through walking/running/biking, great outdoors social distancing activities. Most runners also participate in races, like 5K's, 10K's, and marathons, which are often used to raise money for their favorite charity or cause.
Inspired by people like Elisha Nochomovitz, a 32-year-old restaurant worker who ran a marathon (26.2 miles) on his 23-foot long balcony while on lockdown in France, and others looking to connect their love for service, running, and social distancing together, we're asking any runners/walkers/bikers out there to join us in a virtual race for Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan and Ulster between July 12th - July 26th. You can run any time on any day during that period, but we want everyone to run together and post about it to get #MilesforCharity trending.
Your race course can be your backyard, your balcony, a treadmill, a park that isn't crowded, or anywhere you can maintain proper social distancing. The most important thing is the distancing, running (or walking or wheel-based movement if you need it), and making a positive difference.
What matters most is you're running for an important cause that matters to you, and that's inspiring you and others to be healthy and do our best.
Then, run, walk, or bike your race, and feel free to post your run on social media (Facebook, Instagram) with the hashtag #MilesforCharity
Event details and schedule
You pick the whether you would like to Run/Walk or Bike or even better yet do both for our Virtual Duathlon.
Individual registrations into Run/Wallk 5k or Bike 10k is $25/person
- Register for both events, in our Duathlon, for only $35/person
- Team registration discounts (min 10 people) for any of the three events: $5 off each team member's registration
The events start on Sunday, July 12th 2020 and miles need to be logged by Sunday, July 26th 2020. The minimum distance for the Run/Walk is 5km and the Bike is 10 miles, although you can certainly Run/Walk/Bike more than the required distance.

If you register for the Run/Walk or Bike event you will receive (1) entry into the raffle. If you register for the Virtual Duathlon you will receive (2) entries.
* Minimum 50 registrants required for Cash Raffle to occur
All participants will receive a custom Finisher's medal and certificate of completion for their event in the mail 2-3 weeks after the virtual event.
Please note that this is a SELF-COORDINATED run/ride with no setup, chip-timing, or coordinators on-site. Your time will be self-recorded, submitted, and can be posted on our website after your event.
If you choose to follow one of our listed bike routes, please refer to the maps on the website link listed above. We do not provide GPS tracking or send the map routes to your mobile devices.
