How to Survive Falling in Love With Ultra Running

Written by

5. Pamper yourself.

Too much time on the trail can be a bad thing. It can lead to injury, feelings of tiredness, or worse—it could feel like work. We don't want that happening. So every once in a while, feel free to spend quality time being lazy on your couch, engaging in your secret single behavior.

6. Eat and drink for two.

Eventually, your love for ultra running might leave you with a funny feeling in your belly. After a long run, you may be tempted to order more than just a salad with dressing on the side. This is totally normal. Go ahead have that rack of lamb.

Pop tarts aren't just for breakfast anymore—bring them on your adventure runs. Tortillas filled with Nutella? Take two. And don't forget about the aid stations during a race. You don't find a rest stop on a 5K stocked with cookies, soup, M&Ms, and sandwiches. Buffet!

7. Stay strong through the hard times.

Believe it or not, ultra running is not all smiles. Shocking, I know. Like any serious relationship, sometimes you get on each other's nerves. Don't despair. The rough patch will pass, just give it some time.

Mix things up to make your relationship more interesting:

  • Find a new trail
  • Bring a new friend
  • Add some music to get you in the mood
  • Experiment

When all else fails, retail therapy. New trail shoes never hurt anyone.
