Must Have Gear for Active Parents with Active Kids

There's no doubt that welcoming a little one into this world shakes up our routines and activities, but it doesn't have to mean stopping them altogether! When it comes to staying active as parents, the difference between "falling off the wagon" and making small adjustments to include your little bundle in outings is largely a simple matter of having the right gear.

Your hikes, bikes, and beach days will inherently come with a bit fuller car load—and we're not just talking about the car seat!

From the more obvious (like strollers) to some of the nitty-gritty (like rash guards or bunting), we compiled a list of must-haves to keep you and your baby on the move.

Jogging Stroller

The versatility of a jogging stroller beats any of the other options on the market when it comes to staying active with kids. From gearing up for your morning run or simply heading out on errands as a family, you'll need wheels that can withstand a wide range of terrain—and a jogging stroller is just that.

There are a lot of great options out there that vary in size (some touting the approval of Disney theme parks so you don't have to check them in and rent another upon entry) and car seat compatibility (don't forget to research car seat adaptors when making your stroller selection). You'll no doubt come to love buckling in your new, built-in running buddy and chasing those wheels for miles!

Bike Seat or Trailer

Whether you're accustomed to getting kitted up for a road bike ride, ravaging the trails on your mountain bike, or taking the cruiser bike out to your local park or market, you're going to want to find a way to safely include your new addition. The options here depend not only on the type of bike riding you're planning for but also on the size, age, and activity level of your kids.

From the classic seat that attaches to the back wheel of your bike, to a bike trailer that allows you some additional space and shade for your little one and their belongings, there are a few good options that are great for road cruising to keep you on the move while your little one enjoys the ride. As they grow older (especially if you're one for the trails), you'll want to check out the SHOTGUN kids bike seat that puts your little one in the front seat on your top tube, inspiring many future bike rides of their own!

Helmet

If your little one is going to be on the bike with you, you're definitely going to want to invest in a helmet of their own. Surprisingly enough, there are helmets fit for head circumferences as small as 46 cm. Things to look for when selecting a kid's helmet include MIPS technology, easily adjustable straps, and then comfort/style to help you get your little one strapped in without protest. No one wants a battle over wearing a helmet every time you want to get on the bike and go.

Baby Carrier

From basic carriers and wraps to fully turtle-framed hiking packs for carrying your baby, you're likely going to want more than one of the options here to help you get out with baby in tow. The lightweight comfort of a carrier wrap is great for getting out or even going hands-free around the house once you've dialed in the methods for securing your baby. There is also a great deal of choice when it comes to basic carriers that offer a little more structure as well as versatility (multi-facing options) and durability when it comes to hands-free outings and activities.

However, if you're looking to get out on the trails, you're no doubt going to want to secure yourself a strong baby carrier that offers structural support and safety for you and your little one. While they're certainly an investment, these carriers range can often handle weight capacities up to 50 pounds, so you can enjoy the trails for a couple of years before having to graduate your toddler to their own hiking boots!

Rash Guard

When it's time to hit the lake, beach, or even your local pool, a long-sleeve rash guard is a must-have. Nobody wants to deal with applying sunscreen on their entire body—especially when you know that the minute they hit the water, you're going to have to reapply (over, and over again). A rash guard will take away all that fuss, and give you the confidence you need to enjoy your time in the sun as a family without worrying about your little one getting a sunburn.

Baby Swim Diapers

Reusable and disposable—you're going to want both if you plan to take your little one to swim lessons! Disposable swim diapers will offer the protection you need to avoid a mess any time your baby hits the water, and reusable diapers offer an added layer of accident-proof along with a wide array of different prints to dress up their swim attire!

If you live anywhere near water or plan to bring your kid along to any water activities or sports, swim lessons are a worthwhile investment (as are the diapers when you start them young)!

Bunting

If you live in an area that gets cold during the winter months (or if you frequent the mountain/desert locations as a family), you'll want to look into getting a nice external layer of baby bunting. When selecting the right bunting for your baby you'll want to look at the material, weight, and ease of taking on and off. The material and weight should be warm enough, but not so heavy that it affects their ability to move around. There are a wide array of name-brand options (Patagonia and North Face) as well as many affordable off-brand options on Amazon.

With baby bunting you'll be able to take your new bundle out for all kinds of adventures, no matter the weather, without the worry of their comfort and warmth. Bring on winter running, and family hikes in snow shoes!
