While better known for its basketball arenas than outdoor attractions, Indiana has plenty in store for camping enthusiasts who dare to explore. Which is no surprise when you consider that the Hoosier State has one state park within an hour driving distance of every resident.
So grab the kids, strap on your hiking boots, and throw the tackle box in the trunk because Indiana awaits. Whether you're looking for adventure or a quiet spot by a lake, here's what you need to know about camping in Indiana.
For Families
Perhaps the most well known outdoor attraction in the state, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is a popular destination for both travelers and locals. Stretching 15 miles along the shores of Lake Michigan, the Dunes offer 15,000 acres of marshes, woodlands, river and bog, plus 45 miles of trails to explore.

Another popular destination for families is Turkey Run State Park. Due to its diversity there's something here for everyone. Activities and attractions in the park include hiking trails, horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, a nature center, historic sites and, to top it all off, an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

For Water Lovers
For anglers and boaters wanting to get away from the shores of Lake Michigan, Chain O' Lakes State Park is the place to be. With nine connecting lakes, it's a boater's paradise.
Choose from 18 cabins, four canoe camps and several youth sites at Chain O' Lakes campground.
Anglers should also add Shakamak State Park and Lake Monroe, Indiana's largest lake, to their list. Lake Monroe has three state recreational areas: Hardin Ridge, Paynetown and Fairfax, and a full service marina.
