4 Wednesdays, Oct 9 - Nov 20 (no class Oct 16) 6:00PM - 8:30PM Taught by Natalie Schmidt $110 Members / $121 Non-Members Students will first participate in in-class drawing studies, learning the basics of contour drawing techniques and portrait construction. Students will also be instructed on illustration design principles and surrealism. With this background, students will develop their own surreal portraits with an emphasis on mixed media experimentation and personal symbolism. Students will also participate in two class critiques meant to strengthen their work and expand their usage of art terminology. Materials needed: Medium to large sketchbook/newsprint pad. For drawing studies + charcoal, pencils, or other materials for sketching. Any size paper or canvas for final project. Any illustration medium chosen by the student (markers, colored pencils, acrylic or watercolor paint, etc.) Personal laptop/smartphone (to view reference photos) Teacher bio: Natalie Schmidt is a Delaware based multimedia artist whose dreamlike work finds comfort in eeriness. She received her BFA in Fine Arts at the University of Delaware in 2024. In 2023, Schmidt's photo illustration series, "Flood," won first place in the Society of Publication Designer's Student Competition under the Portrait Photography category, granting her a summer photography mentorship. Her work has also been featured in numerous exhibitions, including the "Lynn H. Sharp Award Exhibition" at the Delaware Contemporary in 2024.
