What's Included

Rock Climbing-101 Mastering Basic Skills is an entry level introductory course designed for the beginner climber to the experienced climber who needs a refresher. Rock Climbing-101 is intended to help recreational climbers form a solid foundation from which to build their skills. The approach is based on safe, efficient climbing practices.

This is a 2-day (weekend) course and you will have the opportunity to overnight camp. We’ll cover handholds and footholds, proper body position and efficient movement on the rock. We’ll cover the techniques for setting up a top-rope anchor system; belay positioning, knot craft and outfitting for the climb.

We’ll spend two days in Savage Gulf Natural Area at the Great Stone Door. You will get hands on experience setting up the Top-Rope and Rappel Anchors from which we will climb and rappel. We will cover equalization, redundancy, and what it means to be BOMBER.

So let’s recap:

• Tuesday and Thursday evening 7pm-8:30pm Skills Instruction Webinar (dates will be emailed)
• Friday evening arrive at Trail Head and camp for the night (about a 1-1/2 hour drive from Cookeville) or
• Saturday morning 7am meet at Stone Door (about a 1-1/2 hour drive from Cookeville)
• Class will assist in setting up the anchors explaining the theory and practical application
• We will climb and rappel Saturday and Sunday setting up on a variety of rock faces
• Sunday afternoon Leave No Trace/Return Home

You’ll come away knowing what it is like to be a fully engaged and responsible member of a climbing party, and with a good measure of actual climbing time on the rock. Students will be outfitted with all technical equipment for this course.

Does Not Include
Students will be expected to arrive dressed appropriately for the weather. Pack a water bottle, food and snacks for the weekend. If you are staying overnight bring your camping gear or rent some from us if you need to.
