Do you have concerns about falling? We have a solution: A Matter Of Balance
This award-winning program is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity levels of older adults who have concerns about falls. It is an eight-week (in-person) course with two trainers per week.
Classes help participants learn to: • Control fears of falling and how to control falls • Set realistic goals for increasing activity • Change their environment to reduce fall risk factors • Promote exercise to increase strength and balance
Designed to benefit adults who: • Are concerned about falls • Have sustained a fall in the past • Restrict activities because of concerns about falling • Are interested in improving flexibility, balance, and strength • Are ambulatory and able to problem-solve
A Matter of Balance: • Program provides eight – two hour (in-person) sessions up to 12 older adults • Classes use role playing, videos, discussions, problem solving, and group activities to review fear of falling. • Participants learn to make good decisions with use of assertiveness training and cognitive restructuring. • There is 30 minutes of evidence-based exercises, which begins in session 3 and continue each week.
Workshops led by: Trained hospital professionals with experience working with adults, and/or by a trained peer with a strong interest in fall prevention.
Matter of Balance class will be held at the Barbara Lee Senior Center in Room 140/41.
Participant must be able to attend all eight classes.
