What's Included

Caretta Sea Turtle Research Project 9 days (June 19th-June 28th 2015) Have you ever wanted to see a giant sea turtle crawl up a beach and lay its eggs? This is your chance- not only to get up close and personal to these gentle giants but to participate in real research! In this exciting trip to Georgia we will be staying on the private island of Wassaw off the coast of Savannah to assist with research of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) during their nesting season! Learn how researchers collect data and how they use that data to help save these threatened and endangered turtles from extinction. Participants will assist with tagging sea turtles, digging nests, patrolling the beaches, and filling out data sheets to help the Caretta Research Project protect and preserve the Georgia sea turtle population. Also while on the island, take hikes with biologists and see local wildlife such as frogs/toads, raccoons, gators, snakes,… This trip is like no other- Create unforgettable experiences while becoming a steward for a great cause! Space is extremely limited so sign up now!! A Typical Day on the Island: This is living with nature at it’s best…Wassaw is a small island with rustic cabin/researcher living conditions: no air conditioning, limited electricity and lots and lots of wildlife! Since we are essentially turning nocturnal, wake up mid-morning in the volunteer cabin, take a nice cool refreshing shower in the enclosed outdoor shower as the local wildlife (treefrogs and tiny crabs) scuttle at your feet Head over to the research cabin and sit under the welcoming ceiling fan as you eat your brunch–anything from a bowl of cheerios to a piled high sandwich of your making! You have free reign of the fridge and cabinets to make whatever you want for brunch! Play games to get to know your fellow volunteers, help the researchers with beach work (record nest locations with a GPS, mark nests dug the night before, etc.), go on hikes through the paths
