Science Olympiad promotes interest and critical thinking in STEM and fosters teamwork. Student teams compete in events pertaining to various scientific disciplines, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. Events are knowledge-based (taking a test or mathematically analyzing data), engineering-based (constructing a device following specific parameters and testing it against others), or lab-based (performing experiments to achieve certain goals). Division C is opened to grade 9-12 students. This division is much more student-driven, requires a higher level of commitment, practice, and autonomy. BASIS Independent McLean has established lower divisions, but 2021-22 will be the inaugural year of Division C, pending interest. The team would be supported by two parent co-coaches (and possibly a faculty advisor). Parent support in mentoring their student remains invaluable. Student's previous Science Olympiad experience is advantageous, but not required. For more information, go to: Virginia Science Olympiad (virginiaso.org).
