About this event

We're sorry, but this activity is over. The last meeting was Tuesday, May 11, 2021.

Rice Creek begins as a black water stream in the eastern part of the Green Swamp, just west of the Town of Leland. Town Creek/Rice Creek is a prime wildlife habitat and wetlands and much of it is protected making it a wonderful location to view wildlife and birds that call the Cape Fear area home. This adventure is also ideal for those who are new to kayaking: it’s slow moving stream that is easily padded. This trip will give you a great feel for what the swamps of eastern North Carolina look like from a kayak.

The program fee includes the use of a kayak, paddle, and personal flotation device (PFD), which must be worn at all times on the water. Tandem kayaks can be provided for those who would like to paddle together and can be requested during registration; both paddlers in the tandem must be registered participants.

Participants who wish to use their own kayak, paddle, and/or PFD may do so and are given an opportunity to make note during registration, but must still wear their PFDs at all times. Email recreation@townofleland.com with questions.

Until further notice, Mahanaim Adventures and Parks and Recreation staff will not offer physical assistance into kayaks. Prior to departure, staff will model how to get in and out of your kayak. However, getting you in and out of the boats will be up to you and will be hands-off for staff. If ADA modifications are needed, staff will be able to assist at that time. Our trips launch from sandy beaches, boat ramps, and kayak launches rather than dock-side; we will still make sure everyone is able to get into the water safely and easily. If you need aid or medical assistance, rest assured that we will not hesitate to assist in whatever manner you need.

Before departure as we cover safety guidelines, launching/landing, etc. as a group, we will maintain a safe distance. Face coverings may be mandatory based on Governor’s Executive Orders. While we are on the water, we will also strive to maintain a safe distance. However, the unpredictable nature of wind and water make can sometimes take that out of our hands. Please aim to provide more than adequate space around you to account for wind and currents. If the case arises that someone comes closer than six feet, it will likely be briefly. We will all do our best to be cautious and understanding during this time. While on the water you may wish to wear a gaiter, allowing for flexible protection (and added sun protection on your neck!). We do not recommend face shields or gloves (unless they are specifically kayaking gloves).
Mahanaim staff sanitize all kayaks, paddles, and personal flotation devices between uses. If you wish to use hand sanitizer, please provide your own.
Restrooms: it is unlikely that any restrooms will be available before, during, or after any of our trips. Some trips (Eagles Island) will not involve getting out of our kayaks. Please plan accordingly.
Shoes: please wear shoes for the duration of this trip. Water shoes or sandals that will not slide or pull off in mud, muck, or sand under water. No flip flops please.
Water/snacks: Please bring plenty of water and your own snacks as you wish. Drinking water will not be provided. Some but not all trips will include breaks for snacks. For those that do not include stops (Eagles Island), you may still wish to have a snack in the boat with you. Please be prepared to pack all of your trash out with you.
Sunscreen/Bug spray: Please bring/use your own sunscreen and bug spray. Most of the trips we will go on are buggy and kayaking is a great way to get sunburned legs and forearms!
