All American Red Cross levels are designed to build upon each other. Age ranges are based on the actual age of child upon start date.
Parent-Child 1 (Ages: 6-18 months): An introductory course which covers safety topics and water readiness skills through parent-led games and songs. Water entry and exit safety is emphasized along with general aquatic safety skills. Children must be accompanied for entire class by person age 16+ with both participants wearing appropriate swim attire.
Parent-Child 2 (Ages: 18-36 months): Focuses on holding and support techniques, water adjustment, breath control, and buoyancy. Water entry and exit safety is emphasized along with general aquatic safety skills. Children must be accompanied for entire class by person age 16+ with both participants wearing appropriate swim attire.
Pre-school (Ages: 3-5 years): Starting with support through more independence and expertise children learn safe water entry and exit skills, buoyancy fundamentals, treading and combined arm and leg action on the front and back. Each pre-school level builds up on the previous one with an increased focus on technique and independence.
Level 1 (Ages: 5+ years): Builds on skills acquired in Preschool levels 1-3, participants perform skills with and without assistance from instructor.
Level 2 (Ages: 5+ years): Extends on skills from Level 1 with emphasis on longer and more independent attempts at swimming on front and back.
Level 3 (Ages: 5+ years): Focuses on feet and head first entries, scissor kick, backstroke, and most significantly, establishment of rotary breathing to the side during front crawl.
Level 4 (Ages: 5+ years): Introduces breaststroke, butterfly, and sidestroke. Emphasis on strength, endurance, and refinement of front and back crawl.
Level 5 (Ages: 5+ years): Emphasizes diving, treading, sculling, and turns. Introduces lap swimming of all six strokes learned in Levels 3 and 4.
Level 6 (Ages: 5+ years): Refinement of turns, strokes, and dives is emphasized along with basic water rescue skills.
Adult (Ages: 14+): Learn how to enter and exit water safely and understand breath control as it relates to body position in water. Steps towards learning how to kick and arm stroke on front and back will be made.
Pre-teen (Ages 11-14): Gain safety and confidence in the water. Basic floating, kicking, and introduction to front and back crawl and basic water safety skills are covered.
