Description

American Western history is a story of climatic extremes, of great hardships, and to overcome suffering at the hands of others and of fortuned won and lost. It is also a testament to the brilliance of American Technology and entrepreneurship, hand in hand with support from the Federal Government. Without railroads, settlements would have crept forward instead of jumping. Without irrigation, agriculture would have been impossible in the Southwest. Without the homestead act, steel plows and horse-drawn harvesters, the great plains would have never been farmed. This Great Course explores the process of Western American history and shows how they became the stuff of myths, legends, movies, political speeches and continuing claims about the exceptional character of the United States.
