The charming and historic town of Golegã is often known as Portugal’s Capital of the Horse.
Golegã is situated between the rivers Tagus and Almonda in Portugal’s Ribatejo Province. This region is one of country’s most fertile areas, dedicated to growing vegetables and corn and rearing livestock, largely cattle. It is also the home to many of the oldest and most prestigious breeders of Lusitanos horses. Here you can taste the famous Portuguese cuisine, known for its wealth of seafood, spices and olive oil. Portuguese cuisine relies heavily on the Atlantic Ocean and the produce grown throughout the country.
After your race, an amazing pasta party with amazing food, is waiting for you. The swim swim is quite unique taking place in a dam and the bike and run course has a little bit of everything including flat sections, bridges, single tracks in Eucalyptus and Cork forests and lots of climbing and downhills to satisfy everyone.

Swim Course: The XTERRA Portugal swim is takes place in Lagoa da Alverca, a lagoon that surrounds the village of Golegã for 1500 meters.
The start is in the water (single wave). Athletes will swim a 750 meter, exit the water and run approximately 30 meters and then dive back into the water from the bridge to cover the second 750 meter swim. This allows a greater connection with the spectators and provides access to spectacular image opportunities.

Mountain Bike Course: The XTERRA Portugal mountain bike course has a preponderant role at approximately 35 km. The bike course begins with about 5km connecting the village of Golegã with the heath hills, a road outside the village next to the agricultural plantations of the region.
At km 5, after passing the Almonda river, begins a frenzy of demanding climbs and technical descents that will test the best athletes in the world. This part of the route is composed of more than 10 km of single track, where loose stones rule, making progress very difficult. This is in contrast to the rapid descents where the adrenaline takes over for the athletes and enjoyment for the public!

Trail Run Course: The XTERRA Portugal run course has the peculiarity of being totally flat and largely spent among agricultural crops including fields of corn, wheat, sunflower, tomato or vineyards. Nevertheless it becomes the same amazing experience and is quite pleasant and entertaining with natural obstacles like tree trunk passes and zones where the progression is aided by ropes. There's also a tunnel that crosses the national road and pleasant passages between the Tagus River and the Alverca Lagoon!

Portugal is one of the world’s friendliest, easiest and safest countries. Adding to Portugal’s appeal are its gracious people, attractive beaches, brilliant sunshine and rich culture.
When visiting Golegã, be sure to make the most of the opportunity to take a walk through the romantic garden around the former studio of Carlos Relvas, a famous 19th-century photographer, or visit the Martins Correia Museum, devoted to the work of a contemporary sculptor. These two men were both born in Golegã and have each contributed in some small way to its current recognition.
It is very easy travel to Golegã for XTERRA Portugal.
Golegã is only120 km from Lisbon. For arrivals coming from Lisbon International Airport, take the subway to the Oriente station (10 min), and then the train to the Entroncamento (1 hour). The XTERRA crew will transfer you from Entroncamento do Golegã (10 min) for free!
