HANDBUILDING CLASS Instructor: Nerrissa McKee
Did you know that beautiful and functional ceramics can be made simply without using the pottery wheel? Discover what you can create with a few simple hand building techniques using slabs, coils and molds. Make a different project while learning a new technique each week. No previous clay experience is required. The class will cover studio policies and procedures which are requirements to become a member of the studio.
You must attend all 6 classes to meet the requirements for studio membership.
Please bring your own cone 6 clay or purchase a bag at the studio for $15. Tools needed: A wire cutter, kidney scraper or potters rib, small paint brush, and metal needle tool or knife, and a plastic fork. A basic tool kit can also be purchased at the studio for $12.
During the six weeks, you'll learn about the studio, rolling slabs by hand, texture techniques, using the slab roller, extruder and glazing your work. Projects include: A box with a lid, a mug with a handle, a bowl, and a platter.
IMPORTANT: Your clay creation will need to fire in the kiln and will be ready to pick up in 4 - 7 days. Please claim your work within 14 days by scheduling a time for pick up with the instructor. Pottery left on the Project Pick-Up shelf for longer than 14 days is subject to removal to make space for other students' work.
