What's Included

Come play with me in a process of self-exploration and negotiate your vision with the natural properties of materials. In the tradition of Thaddeus Mosley’s Touchstone classes, we will address the fundamentals of woodcarving tools and processes, and then use these as stepping stones towards unique abstract sculpture. The workshop will begin with material selection and preparation, with discussion on how to identify the best raw materials for your sculptural idea. You will then learn safe and efficient chisel work, as well as the best positioning of body and material while carving. You will be encouraged to explore your boundaries in a casual, non-judgmental, supportive space and are welcome to bring additional tools, materials, and found objects that you may want to use. Given to Nature, standing 16 feet tall, was designed by Jonathan Shapiro specifically for the lobby of the Fairmont Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is an organic landmark inside this signature property. Most recently, PNC Bank has chosen to feature Seedling, a piece by Jonathan in their new development, dubbed the “World’s Greenest Skyscraper.” A self-taught sculptor who incorporates natural materials along with found objects into his work, Jonathan has had local exhibitions at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and Mendelson Gallery. He has also been commissioned for many private collections. Recently he created Nurture the Core, a site specific sculpture, which included a large, cast-glass element. Growing up in New York, Jonathan was drawn to taking things apart and putting them back together in ways that were most useful, more meaningful, or just more interesting to him. He feels that his art has taken this inclination of his to new levels of expression.

About This Organizer

Touchstone is located in Farmington, Pennsylvania, amid the natural splendor of the Laurel Highlands. Founded in 1972 as the Pioneer Crafts Council, Touchstone's original mission was to foster interest in the preservation of the traditional craft forms and culture of the Appalachian region. Today, the craft school has expanded to include a wide variety of traditional and emerging craft forms, including blacksmithing, ceramics, metal, jewelry, textiles, glass, painting, mosaics, and printmaking. In addition to offering seasonal craft courses taught by nationally renowned artisans, Touchstone provides underserved audiences in the region, from senior citizens to public school students, with craft-centered educational programming. Touchstone's artistic, educational, and residential facilities sit on 150 acres of lush woodlands and pristine wilderness. The campus is covered with towering trees, unique rock formations, and wildflower meadows, and is crossed by McIntyre Run, a rushing stream.

Not only is Touchstone Center for Crafts the only residential craft school in Pennsylvania, it's the natural setting for your creative nature.

Touchstone's mission is to advance excellence in the arts and crafts by educating and encouraging individuals to develop technical skills, good design, and innovative expression. To realize this mission, the school offers workshops, exhibitions, lectures, demonstrations, and other forms of artistic and educational programming throughout the year. Dedicated to achieving national prominence and local relevance, Touchstone strives for national distinction by recruiting some of the best artists in the country to teach high-quality craft workshops that attract a geographically diverse audience. The organization strives for local relevance by providing educational and outreach programming that serves a wide variety of the underserved populations in Fayette County and other parts of southwestern Pennsylvania.
