The object of the game is for the participants to roll each of their lawn bowls as close as possible to the jack (small white ball). Bowls may hit the jack, but the jack must remain within the boundary markers or the end will be declared dead. Bowls can hit other bowls to propel them into each other to knock them outside the boundary lines to take the opponents bowl out of play. Games are played between opposing teams, each with one to four players. After each participant has delivered all of their lawn bowls, the distance of the closest lawn bowl to the jack is determined and points are awarded for each lawn bowl which a participant has closer than the opponent's nearest to the jack.
