This workshop provides mental health professionals with a clinical foundation for integrating trauma-sensitive yoga with PVT, to improve outcomes in clients’ mental health and wellbeing. Recent research shows that yoga oriented, somatic-based work supports the client’s autonomic nervous system balance, a key element in trauma healing. Trauma-sensitive practices taught for use in a psychotherapeutic context will include: psychotherapeutic use of chair yoga postures; breathing practices; and relaxation techniques, including yoga nidra and meditation. Recent developments in neuroscience, such as the discovery of mirror neurons, have also shown that the therapist’s capacity to self-regulate significantly impacts client’s nervous system regulation, and enhances their feelings of safety. Therefore, strengthening the therapist’s ability to self-regulate is a second focus of the training.
