Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) AdultTaught by Wendy Bundy, Zero Suicide Coordinator for Encompass Community Supports (formerly known as Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services)
Be prepared to support those around you by getting certified in Mental Health First Aid. Mental Health First Aid teaches the skills needed to recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges, as well as how to provide someone with initial support until they are connected with appropriate professional help. In the course, you learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies to help someone in both crisis and noncrisis situations, and where to turn for help.7.5 hours (plan for 8 hours)
WHAT IT COVERS: • Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges. • Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges. • How to interact with a person in crisis. • How to connect a person with help. • Expanded content on trauma, substance use and self-care.
Interventions Learned
When you take a course, you learn how to apply the Mental Health First Aid action plan in a variety of situations, including when someone is experiencing:• Panic attacks• Suicidal thoughts or behaviors• Nonsuicidal self-injury• Acute psychosis (e.g., hallucinations or delusions)• Overdose or withdrawal from alcohol or drug use• Reaction to a traumatic eventThe opportunity to practice — through role plays, scenarios, and activities — makes it easier to apply these skills in a real-life situation.
This class is 6.5 to 7 hours in length. Certificates will be provided at the end of class and are good for 3 years. These are available through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing.
This is a free program; materials and instruction are provided by Virginia Cooperative Extension in conjunction with Encompass Community Supports (formerly known as Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services).
