What Happens in Learn-to-Swim Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills?

Learn-to-Swim Level 2's objective is to give participants success with fundamental skills. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Participants learn to glide and float without support and recover to a vertical position. Participants further develop simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back, laying the foundation for future strokes. New water safety topics are introduced, and previously acquired water safety knowledge and skills are reinforced. Includes using flotation devices such as foam noodles, kickboards, or swim bar floats.

Learn-to-Swim Level 2 includes skills such as:

  • Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side (independently, in shoulder-deep water)
  • Exit water using ladder, steps or side (independently, in chest-deep water)
  • Fully submerging and hold breath (independently, at least 10 seconds)
  • Bobbing (independently in chest-deep water, at least 10 times)
  • Open eyes and retrieve submerged objects (independently)
  • Rotary breathing (independently, at least 5 times)
  • Front glide (independently, at least 2 body lengths)
  • Float face down (independently in a front float, jellyfish float and tuck float for 10 seconds)
  • Recover from a front float or glide to vertical position (independently, at least 15 seconds)
  • Back glide (independently, at least 2 body lengths)
  • Back float (independently at least 15 seconds)
  • Recover from a back float or glide to a vertical position (independently)
  • Roll from front to back and back to front (independently)
  • Change direction of travel while swimming on front or back (independently)
  • Tread water using arm and leg actions (independently, in shoulder-deep water at least 15 seconds)
  • Combined arm and leg actions on front (independently, at least 5 body lengths)
  • Finning arm and leg actions on back (independently, at least 5 body lengths)
  • Combined arm and leg actions on back (independently, at least 5 body lengths)

It is common for children to participate in several sessions of Learn to Swim Level 2 before they successfully demonstrate each skill. That is okay! It is not important how quickly they move through a level, but that they acquire each skill.

Parents and guardians must stay off the pool deck during swim lessons and not attempt to coach their swimmer based on what they observe during lessons. All are expected to observe sessions from the elevated spectator area, keeping the pool deck clear of non-participants. Please note that we do not allow any person to climb on or through the railings. Accessibility accommodations should be requested through the front desk and discussed with the instructor as well.

For safety reasons, wet bodies are not allowed in the spectator area. Swimmers may dry off completely on deck or in a locker room before being seated in the spectator area.
