Coaches University Level One training Purpose The purpose of the Coaches University is to provide training to youth coaches annually, to keep them current, and help the department meet its mission of providing quality sports programming for the youth of Sampson County. Procedures All volunteer head coaches will be required to have completed the coaching certification training program. Coaches will be required to complete a volunteer application/background check annually and take an oath related to the Code of Ethics Pledge as provided by the training program. All Non-certified head coaches will have 365 days from the day they begin coaching a particular age group to obtain proper undergraduate certification. If a head coach fails to complete the required mandatory training, they will not be allowed to coach the next program season which runs from July-June. If a head coach is coaching more that one sport, the 365 day count starts with first sport that he/she coaches. All Certified head coaches that fail to renew their graduate certification annually will not be allowed to be a head coach for any department programs. Head coaches that fail to certify or re-certify will not be allowed to coach as an assistant at anytime until: (1) Two full program cycles have passed; or (2) They complete the certification program. Brief Content Description Coaches University is a comprehensive certification program for volunteer youth coaches. Volunteer youth coaches are individuals whose work involves interacting with, influencing and assisting the department in providing a quality sports experience for the youth of Sampson County. The Coaches Certification Program is divided into two different sessions that conveniently run every July and January. Session-I Undergraduate Program -This program is the first level of a coach's education. The program is 12 hours long and divided into a two day session (Friday & Saturday). The course consists of subjects that volunteers need to know before they coach children. The first half of the course addresses psychology, injury prevention and treatment, legal issues, the role of winning/losing and child abuse prevention. The second half of the course addresses the fundamentals of the sport you are coaching and shows you how to teach those fundamentals to your players. 4-hours (ASEP) Coaches Basics 7-hours American Red Cross Sports Safety Training 1-hour Introduction to SCPR Department Youth Athletics Undergraduate Program Day 1 ASEP Coaching Basics-Coaching Youth Clinic 4 hrs Now it's easier than ever to prepare our volunteers to coach a youth sport program! The Coaching Basics video series and classroom materials are specifically designed to show coaches how to coach young players in a healthy competitive environment. Sampson County Parks and Recreation in partnership with the American Sports Education Program (ASEP) is offering the nations number one sports education program. These videos and course materials were developed as part of the widely respected and highly popular Copper Level course, the most effective and consistent training method available for volunteer coaches. The Coaching Basics course covers everything our coaches will need to know to coach youth sports successfully, from guidelines for developing a sound coaching philosophy to tips on ensuring safety and preparing for game day. Our coaches will be exposed to a wealth of practical information, including step-by-step plans for providing our athletes with a safe, enjoyable, and valuable sporting experience. This course is not just a classroom exercise: it also requires coaches to read the book and complete group activities. Completion of all the parts is integral to learning how to become a more successful coach. The classroom portion covers the following topics which are the foundation of a successful coaching experience: -Introduction to the Coaching Youth Clinic -Being a C.O.A.C.H -Coaching Safety -Preparing for Game Day -Sport-Specific Content -Coaching Youth Clinic Wrap- Up-Testing The Coaching Basics video consists of three 20-minute videos. The first video, Being a C.O.A.C.H., provides an introduction to volunteer coaching and working with young players ages 8 to 14. The second video, Coaching Safety, deals with issues for ensuring safe play, such as establishing safety plans and examining equipment, fields, and courts. The third video, Preparing for Game Day, explains how to plan teams, conduct practices, and playing rosters for games and sporting events. Coaches having successfully completed this clinic will receive a successful completion certificate. In addition, the coaches will receive resource materials as part of their participation and completion of this course. Online access to further information and even more course offerings are available at the ASEP web site. Online courses are also being offered through ASEP and are a wonderful convenient way for our coaches to expand their knowledge. Day 2 American Red Cross Sport Safety Training 7 hrs An injured athlete is every coach's worst fear. Whether they are coaching little league, high school students or this country's elite athletes, they feel responsible for making sure their athletes are safe both in practice and during competition. But sports-related injuries do occur. That's why the American Red Cross and the United States Olympic Committee have teamed up to bring you a newly revised Sport Safety Training Program specifically designed for coaches, athletic trainers and others interested in sports. The goals of Sport Safety Training are simple: -To keep athletes safe -To enable coaches and trainers to prevent, prepare for and respond to sports related injuries -To raise awareness of safety issues in athletics -To provide an atmosphere in which athletes can train and compete with the confidence that their coach has taken a sport safety course Sport Safety Training is designed to help coaches, athletic trainers and other participants identify and eliminate potentially hazardous conditions in various sports environments, recognize emergencies and make appropriate decisions for first aid care. The course stresses the basic steps to follow in the case of an emergency, beginning with the most important step---the decision to act--- and helps coaches confront their fears of stepping forward to provide assistance. It also helps to define their roles as the first link in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) System. The training features video, hands-on classroom instruction, and interactive group exercises and activities, plus a handy reference book to use and keep with you during competitions and practices. The training program will include the following courses: -Sports Injury Prevention -First Aid -Adult CPR -Child CPR To successfully complete the course, the participants must attend all class sessions, correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions in the appropriate section(s) on the written exam(s), participate in all skill sessions and scenarios, and demonstrate competency in all required skills. Participants will be awarded certificates for having successfully completed these courses. Renewal of these certificates will be each coaches own responsibility. Renewal courses will be made available through the department as well. Day 2 continued Introduction to Sampson County Parks and Recreation Department-Youth Athletics 1 hr This section of the coaches training will deal strictly with the introduction of the coaches to Sampson County Youth Athletics; its Youth Sports Philosophy; its internal structure; and its leagues setup and format. Topics of Discussion: -Season Format-registration, Player Drafts, Coaches Meetings, Scheduling, Tournaments, -Wrap-up Meetings -Rule Development -Game Day Procedures -Player Information/Rosters/Confidentiality -Sponsorships -Background Checks -Grievance Process Coaches will gain valuable insight into the department?s role as a leader in: -Developing Community Awareness -Increasing Community Growth -Fostering Player Skill Development -Promoting Healthy Lifestyles -Improving the Quality of Life The department will share with coaches its expectations of them. As part of this commitment, coaches will be required to fill out and submit a volunteer application form, submit to a criminal background check, and adhere to the department's articles of coaching on a yearly basis.
