November 14, 2019 - January 31, 2020
Foothill Country Day School
1035 West Harrison
This class is perfect for new kids interested in our debate team, for 5th graders working toward the goal of joining the team next year, and for students who just want to learn how to research any topic effectively. As the year progresses, students in this class may have the opportunity to observe and compete in a debate competition. Students will learn WHY good research matters and why we should care about the world around us in a way that makes us think about quality sources (Buzzfeed vs. the Wall Street Journal, for example) instead of just Google. They will learn how to spot "fake news" and how to talk about controversial topics with confidence, facts and logic. They will learn to use a debate strategy called ARESR -- Assertion, Reasoning, Evidence, Significance, Result. The class will involve games, vision models, and more. Confidence starts here!
