This course will serve as an introduction to the world of stand-up comedy. You donât have to decide to pursue comedy as a career before taking this course. You just have to decide that youâd like to give it a try! For some of you, this will be an exercise in facing your fears. For some of you, this might be the spark that lights a fire that continues for the rest of your life! Weâll give you writing exercises that will challenge you. Youâll use your own life experiences to come up with material. Weâll teach you standard joke structures, open mic and showcase etiquette, and how to find places to watch and perform in Chicago. Youâll be challenged to try different comedy styles with weekly writing and performing exercises. Youâll receive individual feedback and will be required to complete outside assignments, including watching a live stand-up performance, and performing at an open mic. Weâll show you where to find information about the comedy scene in Chicago, and give you the information you need to move forward if you decide to pursue stand-up comedy further. All Students who complete this course will write 5 minutes of original material that will be performed at the end of the class term in their Student Showcase at The ComedySportz Theatre â home of 100 Proof Comedy.
