Welcome to the University of Virginia. Founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, UVa has been constantly evolving to meet the needs of an ever-changing academic community. Over the course of nearly two hundred years, Jefferson's original Academical Village has extended into the surrounding community now uniquely known as UVa Grounds. Despite all of the changes, the University has been able to remain true to its original roots and preserve its illustrious tradition.Join us as we embark on a journey that spans the course of three distinct centuries. Our Bicentennial VolksWalk will include visits to traditional sites such as the Rotunda, the Lawn, Carr's Hill and Central Grounds, as well as more modern additions like Scott Stadium and First Year Residence Halls. Our 10K route will blend the past and present with highlights including the South Lawn, the UVa Hospital, the new UVa Children's Hospital, the Corner and John Paul Jones Arena. Both routes will consist primarily of sidewalks and pavement, and will be wheelchair and stroller accessible only with route modifications. The 5K course is rated 2B with a 420 foot elevation gain and numerous stairwells. Our 10K course is also rated 2B with a 776 foot elevation gain and several additional stairwells. Pets are encouraged to join in on the walk, and there will be water/treat stations for them along the course. Charlottesville is the county seat of Albemarle County.
The start window for the walk is from 9:00AM - 12:00PM at The Rotunda. All walkers must be finished by 3:00PM. Parking is available at the Culbreth or Central Grounds Parking garage, which are 1/4 mile from the start. That distance will be calculated in your total mileage.
AVA Special Programs: Both the 5K and 10K will qualify for the following special events: Points of Reference, Vice Presidential Walks, Walking the Path of Inventions, Walking the United States, Walking the USA A-Z, Make a Wish at a Water Fountain, Bridges - Spanning the USA and Amphitheaters.
