Pedal for the Park is a primary fundraising event for the Friends of Mammoth Cave National Park. Please visit friendsofmammothcave.org for more information about our organization. Routes will be posted and updated on the Friends of Mammoth Cave Facebook page which is linked to the website. Route maps are created using "MAPMYRIDE." Maps will be posted on the Facebook page along with any status updates.
One of our primary goals is to promote life long fitness and healthy life styles through outdoor recreation in general, and more specifically utilizing the opportunites provided by Mammoth Cave National Park and the surrounding region. 2015 is the fourth year for Pedal for the Park. The event will begin and end at the Cave City Convention Center which is located about one mile from I-65; exit 53. The event will begin at 8:00 a.m. Onsite registration will begin at 7:00 a.m.
The 77-mile route is essentially the same as in 2014. From the Convention Center the route ascends the nearby escarpment (a good warmup before beginning is beneficial) onto the primary cave bearing ridges of the area; then it passes through Mammoth Cave National Park from South to North including a crossing of the Green River on the NPS operated ferryboat; then proceeds through the scenic hilly country between the National Park and Nolin Lake; winding through Munfordville and Horse Cave before returning to the Cave City Convention Center. This route is for the fittest riders. The numerous hill intervals make the route more challenging than the mileage alone might indicate. Several participants in 2013 and 2014 commented that it provided a very good preparation for longer events they had planned for later in the season, and that it was as difficult as any 100-mile route they had completed previously. The ferry crossing adds an unusual element to this scenic route. Several SAG stops will be provided.
The 45-mile route remains the same as 2014. In response to comments from 2013 the number of hills was reduced so the route is suitable for intermediate level riders. Beginning at the Cave City Convention Center this route passes through the southern part of Mammoth Cave National Park before passing through the Park City, Kentucky community. The most challenging hill climb on this route is near the beginning point so a good warm up prior to the event may be beneficial. From Park City the route proceeds primarily to the south and east through the sinkhole plain that feeds rainwater into the groundwater streams that pass through the Mammoth Cave system. The sinkhole plain portion of the route offers many scenic vistas of the farmland which was part of the original barrens (i.e., prairies) of southcentral Kentucky. Several SAG stops will be provided.
The 12.5-mile route will be an abbreviated version of the 40-mile route located in the sinkhole plain. It feature gently rolling hills. By avoiding long or steep hill climbs this route is suitable for younger riders and beginners.
Riders must wear helmets during the event and obey all Kentucky traffic laws. Adult supervision is recommended for all participants under the age of 16 years.
