About This Activity


Come and ride in a control pace “PELOTON” and feel like you are in the Tour de France!!

 This is thesecond annual Raul Alcala Challenge / Gran Fondo Brownsville-South Padre Island, Tx on November, 6th 2016,  hosted in Brownsville TX and in the US.

The Raul Alcala Challenge / Gran Fondo Brownsville showcases the Mexican – American border site and the Historical Downtown Brownsville, the course is on the Lower Rio Grande Valley and the stunning beauty of best Texan beach on the Gulf of Mexico at South Padre Island. 

While the route is flat, distance, heat and wind provides ample challenges.


It’s a RIDE not a RACE!



 This is the ride that crosses the South Padre Island causeway twice in same day, stunning views of the water from the top of the bridge on both directions, so come and join us on this new experience. The bridge will be closed on both directions the riders need to be crossing the casuseway not later than 9:30am and on the way back by 11:30am. 



2016 Raul Alcala Challenge Brownsville -South Padre Island Gran Fondo  – The first Gran Fondo in the RGV area is hosted in Historic Brownsville, we are expecting about 1000 + riders, riding the two distances in hot weather conditions. While the course is completely flat, trade winds and hot Gulf sun added two unique challenging elements for all event participants.

Raul Alcala Challenge Brownsville -South Padre Island Gran Fondo  “The First Gran Fondo in Texas Paradise” riders had the choice between the 100mi / 160km “long route” the 32mi / 65km “medium route”.  All of the routst start  in the heart of Downtown Brownsville, at ITECC-Amigoland Mall. The Gran Fondo is the only  bike ride or event to cross the causeway twice in same day. The Media Gran Fondo will finish in Schlitterbahn Water Park is South Padre Island.


Recharge batteries and water at the pit stops along the route.

Everyone will enjoy riding in the spectacular paced Peloton through a course in a beautiful sunny weather.  

Raul Alcala Challenge Gran Fondo is well organized and has been hosted in different cities in Mexico; We are getting full support from local, regional and state government, City of Brownsville, South Padre Island, Rancho Viejo, Port Isabel, Los Fresnos and San Benito.


If you leave in any of the cities above come out cheer and support the riders on the "PELOTON" while riding by your area.

Everyone will be treated like a PRO for this day!

Event details and schedule


Ride begins at 7:00am

 Support will be available throughout the course, please bring your own water bottles. Electrolytes, water and snacks will be provided at all stops along the route.

 The route will be open to cars, we will have Police and/or Constables leading the way with other Official vehicles, so we encourage everyone to ride on the right lane keeping up with the group and keeping your space and respecting each other, the pace will be controlled by Raul Alcala and other Cyclists. When arriving to Port Isabel the Peloton will continue riding up the bridge with no stopping on the bridge until you get to rest stop at Schlitterbahn parking lot. The bridge will not be closed to traffic so cyclist will have  to ride on the right side at all times.   

 Parking will be available at the event site, please follow the posted signs.



All Cyclists will take on from Downtown Brownsville at ITECC (International Technology, Education and Commerce Center) to South Padre Island and back going throug Post Isabel, Laguna Vista, Bayview, San Benito, Rancho Viejo and back to Brownsville to ITECC. This is a RIDE not a Race but each other will be challenging themselves, in a personal endurance challenge; the challenge is the distance, heat and wind.

The Medium Fondo ride is on the same day and time. Media Fondo FINISH LINE at SchlitterbahnWater Park in South Padre Island.

  Transportation will be provide back to the after party at ITECC. 

   The  Gran Fondo riders after Schlitterbahn rest stop and FINSIH LINE for the Medium Fondo, will continue on a tour around South Padre Island and coming back to cross the Causeway to Port Isabel, we need to cross the bridge before 11:30am.

 The Gran Fondo will continue the route on Highway 100 to Laguna Vista, this is the last stop with both groups. Then the 100 miles peloton will make a right turn to FM-510 going to Bayview following scenic 510 to US 77 in San Benito making a left to come back to Rancho Viejo and back to Downtown Brownsville.

Package Pick up is a great opportunity to meet with Raul Alcala and other cyclists, make new friends.

Package includes bike jersey, ride number, map with route and more.

It’s MANDATORY to wear the event jersey the day of event.

 All riders must check in at Package Pick up at ITECC at 301 Mexico Blvd, Downtown Brownsville.

Pick up hours - Saturday from 10am to 7pm





Brownsville has direct flights from many major Texas cities and from Las Vegas. Harlingen is our neighbor city 28 miles and also has direct flights from major cities. Both Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport and Valley International Airport will be happy to welcome you for the event.
