Ceramics: Handbuilt Sculptural & Functional Forms
Instructor: Tracey Priska

In this class, participants will experiment with and explore hand-building techniques
such as pinching, coiling, slab construction and subtractive methods to create both
sculptural and functional forms. Class time will also include technical demonstrations,
group discussions and presentations of contemporary, ceramic work. Students will be
encouraged to work at their own pace and skill level with guided instruction to continue
developing their own personal expression.

Ceramics Studio Policies
Ceramics students are required to follow all department policies regarding safety and
health standards including:

• Masks are strongly recommended when in BBAC facility, and in some
circumstances, required.
• Following sign up procedures and attendance guidelines for Open Studio times
Ceramics Open Studio Information - No Instruction Open Studio time is available for students currently registered for a ceramics class of
12 hours or more. Dates and times are available for sign up in the ceramics studio during
the first week of classes and throughout the term. All students will have to rotate open studio
time. Open studios are not intended to take the place of a production studio and are intended to
further the education experience. Only work made at BBAC using clay from BBAC, can be
glazed and fired at BBAC.

Purchasing Clay at the BBAC
One 25 lb. bag of clay is included with your class. BBAC offers the service of
purchasing additional clay (one bag at a time) and can be purchased at the beginning
of your class time.

• Limit is three, 25 lb. bags per term
• Each 25 lb. bag of Wheat Stone is $17
• Each 25 lb. bag of Porcelain is $20


Basic Materials to bring to class:

  • Basic Pottery Tool Kit (sold on Amazon.com, Michael's or Green's)
  • Apron (or wear something that can get dirty)
  • Small plastic bucket
  • Rags
  • Gloves
  • Dust mask
