Painting: Plein Air Landscape
Instructor: Edward Duff Please note, this workshop will take place outside at a location TBD and all
students will receive an email with location and directions. It's important to come prepared with all of the necessary materials. Below I have
listed the recommended supplies. I will be doing all demos in oil, as it is a preferred
medium for painting outdoors. However, it's fine if you'd like to work with acrylic,
gouache or watercolor. Please email me with any questions regarding supplies.
1 folder for handouts
1 small sketch pad - I recommend the 5 x 8 1/4" Moleskine sketchbooks (light purple label)
1 kneaded eraser
1 graphite pencil - I recommend Cretacolor Monolith 4B
1 view finder
1 9 x 12 pad of Arches Oil Paper or Canson Canva-Paper for studies
1 Drawing board (15 x 16 minimum) to affix canvas / oil paper to
1 Roll of Artist Tape - I recommend the black Blick Artist Tape as it is less distracting
than the blue kind
1 pre-stretched canvas, canvas panel or primed wood panel (Ampersand Gessobord is
a great brand) - 8 x 10, 9 x 12 or 11 x 14
1 pad of disposable palette paper - Richeson Grey Matters is a good option.
1 brush cleaner with lid (Silicoil makes a glass jar with a metal spring that is great for
classroom work)Metal palette cups - Martin Universal Design Museum Double Palette Cup is
Painting medium of your choice - Gamblin Solvent Free Gel and Winsor and
Newton Artist's Painting Medium are good options
1 bottle of Gamblin Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits - 32 oz size is recommended
to fill both the Silicoil jar and the separate metal cup for thinning paint
1 pair of scissors
1 12" straight edge ruler
1 portable easel - Blick Art Materials carries several plein air easels to choose from.
If you're interested and willing in making an investment, check out Edge Pro Gear,
STRADA Easel, Open Box M, Coulter Easel or Guerrilla Box. Also check with Judson's
Art Outftters for other options.
Brushes - a variety of filberts, flats and rounds / both natural hog bristle and synthetic
in assorted sizes
1 roll of paper towel or a bag of lint free rags
1 roll of masking tape - I recommend the black Blick Artist Tape from Blick Art Materials
- Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, bug spray & rain coat
- Snack, lunch & something to drink
- Ziplock bags to carry paint and liquid painting materials
- Clip on umbrella - I recommend the Artwork Essentials EASyl umbrella
- Baby wipes for cleaning your hands
- Plastic bags for paper towel and rags
- Large garbage bags or smaller flat cardboard boxes to transport wet paintings
and palettes home in your car. If you shop at Costco, I recommend taking home
a few of their free cardboard boxes to use. The large flat boxes used for berries
and tomatoes comes in really handy. Additionally, large garbage bags can be laid
flat in your trunk or back seat to keep paint off of your car upholstery and interior.
All of the above painting supplies can be found at Blick Art Materials.
There are stores located in Dearborn, Detroit and Royal Oak.
