This class, for beginning students, is an immersive introduction to the craft of making hand sewn books. This hands on workshop will explain the hows and whys of basic bookbinding and give students the tools and knowledge to create books on their own without expensive bookbinding equipment. Students will make a pamphlet stitched book with a softcover as well as learn how to make decorative paste papers to use on an elegant exposed-spine, ribbon binding with a hardcover, to take home. Sat, June 27 • 11am-3pm $35 Materials Fee payable to the teacher on the first day of class Instructor bio: Rochelle Youk is a multidisciplinary visual artist with a practice investigating craft traditions through the lens of cultural exchange. Much of her work is informed by the processes that are required by specific artforms, including that of bookbinding. After earning an MFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute, she completed a bookbinding apprenticeship at letterpress publisher, The Arion Press where she has continued to work in various roles for almost a decade. She also works as an independent bookbinder for Bay Area artists and publishers and in that role has guest lectured at CCA, SFAI, as well as other local creative spaces.
