20 Big Recruiting Tournaments for Girls

Summer basketball isn't just for the boys.

It's also a prime opportunity for girls basketball players to get noticed by college coaches, who are spending the entire month of July combing the country for the next big basketball star.

Division I women's basketball coaches have two 10-day periods in July to travel the country evaluating players. In 2010, that first period runs from July 6-15. A week later, they're back at it from July 22-31.

There's no shortage of tournaments during that time, either. So long as they are NCAA-certified, college basketball coaches are allowed to show up and look for players who could fit into their future teams. Evaluation periods don't allow coaches to talk to recruits, but they can take notes and figure out who can fit into their plans, and then get in touch during a later date.

So what tournaments do these coaches go to? It's impossible to list them all, but here are 20 events in those 20 days that you are likely to see dozens--if not hundreds--of college coaches attending:

July 6-15 Evaluation Period

AAU Super Showcases

July 8-13, 2011
Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Four showcase tournaments run concurrently during this five-day stretch--13U, Freshmen, Sophomore and Junior.

Big State Flava Jam

July 6-8, 2011
Dallas, Texas
Held on the campus of SMU, this 6-year-old event is popular for teams in the Midwest and South.

End of the Trail All-Star Division

July 6-9, 2011
Portland, Ore.
One of the west coast's best tournaments features 208 teams and has games at seven different locations around Portland.

Nike Summer Showcase

July 10-13, 2011
Chicago, Ill.
A 12-year old event in the Windy City is also one of the largest--more than 4,000 athletes, and 500-plus college coaches at all levels stopped by to evaluate in past years.

USJN Blue Star Nationals

July 9-11, 2011
Las Vegas, Nev.
The three-day tourney is limited to 32 teams and is played at the UNLV Recreation Center.

MSNM National Championships

July 10-13, 2011
Seattle, Wash.
There's a five-game minimum per team, and games are played on the University of Washington campus, among other sites.

adidas National Championships

July 13-15, 2011
Bloomington, Ind.
The tournament has brackets for U17 down to U13 and is played at the campus of the University of Cincinnati.

AAU National Championships

July 5-15, 2011
Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
The AAU championships for 9th and 12th graders will be from July 5-10, while 10th and 11th graders go from July 10-15.
