Why Dirty Socks?
Ellie Levy was born with cystic fibrosis, a terminal disease that primarily effects the lungs. At the age of 22, Ellie required a double lung transplant to survive. After several days, the first transplant failed.
One month later she received her second transplant. We were filled with joy and hope as this transplant appeared to have worked.
Ellie’s surgeon Gustavo told her that in order to survive she would have to walk. To motivate her, he asked for “dirty socks.” Despite the pain, Ellie walked and walked and walked.
One day Ellie gave Dr. Gustavo her dirty socks in a plastic bag. He told her that he would keep her socks in his office for the rest of his life. She inspired him with her desire to live and her determination and her fight!
Sadly, Ellie did not survive. She was a warrior.
All children suffering with life-threatening illnesses must walk to get well. Sometimes they can only walk a few steps. On January 20th 2019 we walk for them, we walk for Ellie.
LET’S ALL GET OUR SOCKS DIRTY!!!
